Bill Smith at White Flag Projects
Somewhere between Lee Bontecou's newer works and Jeff Shores' electronic video installations is Bill Smith's interactive sculptures. His exhibition, Supernatural (Sept 16 - Oct 21), is the inaugural exhibition of White Flag Projects, directed by artist Matthew Strauss.
The most delightful thing about Smith's work is figuring out how to activate them. Holding and manipulating a small hanging sculpture brings a group of technical instruments to life. Breathing on one sculpture affects another. At least one has a built in Flame-Thrower (yes, capitalized) that will be demonstrated at the artist talk on Thursday, October 12 at 8 pm.
Artists often use interactivity poorly, however this is not the case with Smith. He forms a compelling group of metaphors which are strengthened through the audience interaction. That said, there is no hint of potential interactivity in the work — so it's a good idea to have a gallery member walk you through on arrival.
